Metabones Announces Speed Booster ULTRA II+ and Smart Adapter II+ for Fujifilm
Vancouver, Canada, August 18, 2026, Metabones® refreshes its Speed Boosters® and Smart Adapters™ for Fujifilm X mount cameras with 4 new products:
- EF-X mount T Speed Booster® ULTRA™ 0.71x II+ (MB_SPEF-X-BT4)
- EF-X mount T Smart Adapter™ II+ (MB_EF-X-BT4)
- EF-X mount T CINE Speed Booster® ULTRA™ 0.71x II+ (MB_SPEF-X-BT5)
- EF-X mount T CINE Smart Adapter™ II+ (MB_EF-X-BT5)
These new products feature outstanding phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) and in-body image stabilization (IBIS) performance.
TruePDAF Technology™
Metabones' TruePDAF Technology™ stores lens profile data of more than 100 lenses in firmware. When a match is found, the Speed Booster's or Smart Adapter's LED glows magenta (instead of blue) to indicate that additional lens metadata is conveyed to the camera. With that extra information, PDAF performance is improved to a level never seen before with an adapted lens on a Fujifilm camera. The list of support lenses can be found on the web page of each new product.
A high-end Fujifilm camera which supports PDAF is required, including the X-H series, X-T2 and newer and XPro2 and newer. Some mid-range and entry-level cameras may revert to contrast-detection autofocus (CDAF).
To clarify, PDAF is still supported for lenses not on the list with excellent performance. TruePDAF Technology makes PDAF even faster, but it is not a strict requirement for PDAF support. Compared with the competition, this is a major score for Metabones because you are not subject to the whim of the manufacturer on whether your lens is “optimized”. Instead, Metabones gathers information about the lens as you normally use it and saves what it has learned in its non-volatile memory when you turn off the camera, thereby obviating any need for “optimization”. You may think of Metabones as a self-optimizing adapter.
New II+ Hardware
The new II+ hardware shares the same processor as last year's CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II and CINE Smart Adapter II. For customers who have already purchased Mark II, a free firmware upgrade to version 1.70, which is immediately available for download from Metabones' web site for Mac and Linux users and from Microsoft Store for Windows users, is all that is required to gain the benefits of new TruePDAF Technology and the fastest PDAF performance.
Here, "II+" means additional memory for future expansion. At the time of writing this additional memory has not been leveraged yet.
Speed Booster® ULTRA™
There is only one true ULTRA™ and it is only available from Metabones. As one of the most influential inventions of the mirrorless era, there has been many imitators on the market, but the real Speed Booster® ULTRA™ by Caldwell Photographic has never been surpassed in optical quality. Speed Booster® ULTRA™ uses an advanced 5-element/4-group optical design incorporating ultra-high index tantalum-based optical glass to achieve extraordinary optical performance with improved corner sharpness, distortion and reduced vignetting. It has a magnification of 0.71x, and so it effectively reduces the crop factor of mirrorless Fujifilm X mount cameras from 1.5x to 1.07x. Speed Booster® ULTRA™ makes very effective use of exotic materials at the furthest limit of glassmaking technology, and as a result is well corrected for use with virtually all full-frame SLR lenses regardless of exit pupil distance. Thus, the Speed Booster ULTRA performs extremely well with professional-grade f/2.8 zoom lenses such as the 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms by Canon to produce 17-50mm f/2.0 and 50-142mm f/2.0 high-speed zooms, respectively. Similarly, high-speed fixed focal length lenses such as a 50mm f/1.2 will be transformed into a 35.5mm f/0.9 lens with excellent contrast and resolution from the centre all the way to the edges of the image. (More information can be found in the press release here)
Since the record of the highest pixel density for any APS-C camera is currently held by Fujifilm, only the best optical quality will do. Speed Booster ULTRA is therefore the perfect fit to the sensor of your Fujifilm X Mount camera. Make your full-frame lenses one stop brighter, 0.71x wider and increase their MTF (modulationtransfer function, a measure of lens sharpness).
CINE Series, Featuring Patented Positive-Lock Mechanism
The CINE version is equipped with an extremely robust cine-style positive-locking mechanism to ensure that no play occurs during focusing or zooming. This is especially important when using EF lenses for cinema work.
Other Features
Highlighted features exclusive to Metabones:
- T-stop display with supported cinema lenses and supported Fujifilm cameras (X-H series, X-T2 and newer, and X-S series).
- Smooth iris with supported Canon, Sigma and Tamron lenses for aesthetically-pleasing iris/aperture transitions in movies.
- Optimized support of both in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and optical image stabilization (OIS).
- Push button for choosing between IBIS and no stabilization while OIS is off and for bringing up the camera's manual lens selection menu. (Feature needs to be enabled with Metabones App before use.)
- 'T' true flocking interior to cut down on internal reflection. Note that this is not merely adhesive-backed felt paper, but a seamless flocking process.
- Rubber gasket protects X mount connection from dust and moisture.
- Arca-Swiss-style tripod foot for use with quick-release systems as well as the optional Metabones Mount-Rod Support Kit II.
Where and How to Buy
Metabones EF-X mount T CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II+ will be available in September 2026 from Metabones' worldwide network of resellers as well as its web store for USD699 plus shipping and applicable duties and taxes. Metabones EF-X mount T CINE Smart Adapter II+ costs USD449, EF-X mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II+, USD649, and EF-X mount T Smart Adapter II+, USD399.
Upgrades for Existing Customers
Metabones releases a scaled-down version of firmware version 1.70 that fits within old Mark I hardware, which is available for download from Metabones' web site (Mac/Linux) and Microsoft Store (Windows). This is a major autofocus performance improvement over the previous version, even though we are reaching a hardware ceiling and no further autofocus improvement will be possible with old Mark I hardware. However, Metabones will continue to release bug fixes by firmware update for Mark I in the foreseeable future. Metabones will be switching to an odd/even-versioning system, where odd-numbered versions are Performance Releases for Mark II/II+ only, and even-numbered versions are Stable Releases for both Mark I and Mark II/II+. Version 1.70 is the last odd-numbered version that is released for both Mark I and Mark II/II+.
Mark I customers may inquire about our upgrade program to Mark II+ by writing to our customer service (support@metabones.com). The existing housing will be kept but we will replace the circuit board with a new Mark II+ circuit board.

About Metabones
Metabones®, together with its allied partners Caldwell Photographic and WB Design, is the pioneer and leader of two key technologies which have catalyzed the transition from mirror to mirrorless. Speed Booster® (winner of the 2013 TIPA Best Photo Accessory Award) makes lenses brighter, wider and sharper, and Smart Adapter™ breaks the lens mount compatibility barrier by electronically integrating interchangeable single-lens reflex (SLR) lenses and mirrorless cameras. Metabones® offers a comprehensive range of adapters covering most popular lens mounts, as well as some rare and exotic ones. "Always at the forefront of innovation without ever setting aside practicality as a professional tool" perhaps best epitomizes Metabones' philosophy.
